Please join us for our 3rd Annual Family Leadership Night on Thursday, January 24, 2018, from 5:00-6:30.  There will be a variety of leadership activities set up around the building for your family to enjoy as you learn about how we infuse service learning with the 7 Habits and their application in your household and beyond the school walls. Please feel free to move throughout the building as your schedule allows. This night has been designed in an open house format so it is not necessary that you be here for the entire time.

As we prepare for Family Leadership Night we are in need of your help. We are planning to play READ-O (Bingo) for BOOKS as our Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw activity and we need new or gently used books for our READ-O prizes. As we play READ-O that evening, each student winner will be able to choose a donated book as their prize. If you have any books (in good condition) that your family is no longer reading or you’d be willing to purchase a new book or two to donate to a great cause, please send them to school by Friday, January 18th. There is a box in the BV office for all book donations.

Valentine’s parties are Friday, February 15 from 2:30 pm – 3:15 pm.  No food or candy items will be allowed for distribution by students attached to Valentine cards at the Valentine party.  Please refer to page 20 of the Waukee Student Handbook for more information.  Students are welcome to bring cards and non‐food items (such as pencils, stickers, etc.) if they choose.

Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to go outside for recess. Hats and gloves are important during the winter months. Boots and snow pants are needed when there is snow on the ground. On snowy days, students are required to stay on the blacktop unless they are wearing boots and snow pants. Students are not allowed to stay indoors for recess without a medical excuse. Remember to label all of your child’s winter clothing.

Brookview’s Lost and Found is located outside the music room.  Please label all jackets, coats, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, water bottles and lunch boxes.  Please check the Lost and Found area often. Twice a year, at Winter Break and Spring Break, anything not labeled is donated to a charitable organization.

Any day children are free from any of the concerns listed above, they should be at school! While we certainly understand that illnesses and special circumstances are bound to happen, especially with children, please do your best to help your children be at school every day. Avoid scheduling appointments during the school day, when possible. Here are a few things to keep in mind when considering your child’s school attendance:

Why Attendance Matters

  • Research shows that missing 10 percent of a school year, or two days a month, negatively affects a student’s academic performance.
  • Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade.
  • When students improve their attendance rates, they improve the likelihood of school success academically and socially.
  • All students in a classroom may suffer when even one student is chronically absent. The inconsistency can hamper a teacher’s ability to engage all students and meet their learning needs.

Attendance Works, 2018,

With the change in seasons, it’s time for new menus!  These menus started Monday, November 26th at all schools and run through March 1, 2019.  Make sure to check them out to see when there will be new items and your all-time favorites!

If you live in Dallas County and are experiencing a financial hardship that is effecting your family’s ability to obtain necessary clothing items (clothes or shoes that fit, that are clean and hole-free, that are weather appropriate, etc.), community families and businesses have provided an outlet where these can be obtained free of charge through the Waukee Community Closet. We offer regular “shopping” days where you can pick out clothing items to fit your family member’s needs. Visit us at 77 NE Carefree Lane in Waukee.

No homemade treats or food items are permitted.  All treats must be commercially prepared and packaged for distribution with the intact ingredient label. Please refer to the Waukee Parent Handbook for more information on the Waukee Allergy Policy. The Waukee Nutrition Department has peanut free snacks for purchase. Please visit for more information.

Notifications include inclement weather, late starts or other emergency situations that may arise during or after school hours. SchoolMessenger works with PowerSchool, so there is no list for parents to sign up for, however, in order for parents to receive a text message, parents must complete the “opt-in” process.

Subscribe by texting: “Y”, “Yes,” or “Subscribe” to 68453. The cell phone numbers used must be in PowerSchool to receive a notification. Unsubscribe at any time by texting the key words: “Quit”, “Remove” or “Unsubscribe” to 68453.

Waukee Foundation

The Waukee Foundation Gala is quickly approaching and the Brookview PTO has been asked to provide a basket to be auctioned at the event.  The theme we have been given is “Baker’s Basket” and anything baking or food related is welcome!  Please drop any donations off in the office by January 23.

For more information about the foundation or the annual gala slated for February 23, please visit

Thank you for your generosity!

Helping Hand

Helping Hand’s next meeting will be Tuesday, February 12. We will not be meeting in January.

Staff Appreciation

Let’s get a head start on showing Brookview teachers some love during Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6-10, 2019)! From now until the end of April, we will be collecting $5 gift cards in the main office with the goal of collecting enough cards to give one to each teacher during Teacher Appreciation Week. Simply sign up for the number of $5 gift cards you would like to purchase, drop them in the PTO donation box in the main office, and we’ll take care of the rest!

Please note: The gift card you donate may not necessarily go to your child’s teacher. As such, please do not include the recipient’s name, but feel free to include your child(ren) or family name on the card as the gift giver!

As always, families are welcome to celebrate their teachers individually, instead or in addition to this PTO-led effort! Thank you for your generosity!

Bolt for Brookview

Bolt for Brookview Obstacle Course Fun Run will be held on April 19th, 2019. The 5thgraders have chosen the theme again this year and it will be NEON!  Kick-Off Assembly will be held on Friday, March 15th.  The fundraising collection period will be between March 25th – April 12th.  The Fun Run committee will be at conferences the week before spring break to help you register your child(ren) for the Fun Run.  Additionally, there will be sign-up instruction sheets and iPads outside of every teacher’s classroom where you can also register your child(ren).  If you are a returning family, there is a re-registration option where you use your same credentials as last year.  As we get closer to the event, more information will be sent home with your child(ren).
